Sword Dance Festival and Tournament in Grenoside |
This year Grenoside plays host to the annual Sword Dance Union (SDU) tournament, with the main competition day on Saturday 16th October.
As part of our celebration year we have made it bigger and better than before, with over 20 teams from across the country and even overseas, featuring:
- Sword dancing tournament and displays featuring adult and youth teams, taking place at the Old Harrow Inn, Old Red Lion, and Methodist Church Hall
- Youth competition in the Grenoside Community Centre
- Special performance of dances compered by Grenoside's own Geoffrey Whitehead playing Cecil Sharp, in the Community Centre
- Evening barn dance in the Community Centre
And that's just Saturday! On Sunday 17th October we have:
- Informal dancing at the village pubs
- A special afternoon performance of our tribute show "To Slay a Bullock" in the Methodist Church Hall, featuring members of the Grenoside and Newcastle Kingsman teams in a specially written song and dance piece based on the dances collected in Cecil Sharp's "Sword Dances of Northern England Vol. 1".
